>>> The Peace Bridge, River Foyle, Derry: “Following a successful competition entry, WilkinsonEyre was commissioned to design a bridge across the River Foyle in Derry~Londonderry. Linking the redeveloped site of the former army barracks at Ebrington with the historic city centre across the water, the 235m-long cycle/footbridge follows an S-shaped alignment that resolves two skewed axes at each abutment and responds to views up and down the river. The project was funded by the EU PEACE III Programme, which supports the creation of new, genuinely shared spaces to tackle the problems of separated communities in Northern Ireland and the Border region. For this reason, the bridge is conceived as a pair of self-anchored suspension bridges that overlap visually and structurally at the middle of the river in a symbolic demonstration of unity and concord.” >>> The “peace” line, Belfast copyright Frankie Quinn >>> The Brooklyn Bridge (1883): “Irish immigrant workers formed the base of the construction team to build the Brooklyn Bridge begun in 1883. Many brave Irishmen died due to terrible working conditions. It was hard, dangerous work, [and] a common expression heard among the railroad workers was ‘an Irishman was buried under every tie.'” >>> Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge, County Antrim: “Not a bridge for the bearer of a sensitive ticker, this bridge links the mainland to Carrick-a-Rede Island and is as rickety as they come. Traditionally used by fishermen who needed to check their nets, these days it’s brave tourists who venture across the 20m-wide swaying bundle of rope and wood. Worth fighting the nerves to cross as the views and scenery are beyond compare.” >>> The “peace” line, Belfast copyright Frankie Quinn
